Characteristics:
Obtained by Smalley - Registered plant.
Natural hybrid between Ulmus pumilla and Ulmus davidiana var japonica, first discovered
in the Sapporo Botanical Gardens, RESISTA ®
has undergone many tests by INRA and the Service for the Protection of
Plants. It has revealed to be resistant to the scourge of Dutch elm disease, which
have ravaged the Elms in our towns and countryside.
A very vigorous tree,
it can reach 10m high and 4m round in good growing conditions. It is slightly
smaller than our traditional Elms. It is hardy and branches well, it can be pruned
and, due to its upright growth, it should be well staked and pruned back in its
first years.
Its light green foliage turns golden yellow in autumn.
Uses:
It tolerates
all soil types, except waterlogged and all climatic conditions. Since its launch
by SAPHO in 1989, RESISTA ® has allowed
the return of the elm to the tissue of the countryside in the form of windbreaks
and hedges. It is also suitable for the urban environment; lining walkways or
planted as a specimen, giving pleasant shade.
