INRA - European P.B.R.
Bronze
Medal at PLANTARIUM 2009 (Boskoop - Holland).
This
new variety, resulting from a hybridization carried out at the INRA research station
in Angers, is valued for its compact and dwarf form and the unusual contrast between
its dark foliage and white flowers. BLACK AND WHITE ®
is the first Weigela with this remarkable colouring.
A medium grower it has
very short internodes keeping its dimensions small.
Height: 0.30m to 0.40m
Spread: 0.60m to 0.80m.
The shoots of this deciduous shrub have plum coloured
tints. The leaves are dark green and then gradually develop the darker plum colouring
as the summer advances.
In May and June groups of pure white trumpet shaped
flowers with dark red throats are produced at the ends of the branches. The attractive
marking at the base of the flowers recalls the colour of the young leaves.
Uses :
The
plant will grow in any moist, well drained soil in full sun or semi-shade.
BLACK AND WHITE ®
is attractive planted in a pot or in a small bed in
association with perennials or other low shrubs.
A light prune at the end
of the flowering season is all that's needed to keep it looking good.
