SAPHO, Editors

Our role is to publish and develop a catalogue of registered new plants, on behalf of the creators of these plants. We watch over the strict adherence to the rights given to the plants in our catalogue:
- C.O.V. (Certificat d'Obtention Vegétale -Plant Variety Rights Certificate, PVRC ): It is accorded by the relevant authorities for a precise variety name. The rights are given for a country or for the European Union.
-Trademark: given by the INPI (Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle - Patent Office). It is optional and easily recognisable by the symbol ® which follows it. It is given to a range of plants with precise characteristics (SAPHYR ®) or more generally to a given variety (MAREE D'OR ® 'Courtasol').

SAPHO close to scientific research and breeders:
SAPHO was founded in 1972 when the Research Institute INRA (Angers branch) and professional French breeders came together to add value to plant varieties in France and Europe. A group of professionals was formed to select and sell INRA varieties.

Malus PERPETU ® 'Evereste' was the first fruit of this close collaboration which has grown with the launch of a pioneering range of Forsythia and then Pyracantha resistant to fire blight. It is continuing: Caryopteris GRAND BLEU ® 'Inoveris', Lavatera CHAMALLOW ® 'Inovera', Clematis SAPHYRA ® Indigo 'Cleminov51', Hydrangea SEMIOLA ® 'Inovalaur' and recently the range of CAPRILIA ® for Lonicera, are the latest beautiful examples of this partnership.

SAPHO close to the market:
Over time and to adapt to the changing conditions, in 1993 SAPHO changed from a non-profit making organisation to a company. Today there are 20 breeders who are shareholders, all nurserymen, breeders or growers.
As we always want to satisfy our customer and landscaper's demands, all our new varieties are carefully selected from breeders all over the world.
To offer dreams and security are our goals.

We look for the following when we make our choices :

The new plants offered by SAPHO are tested, propagated, grown and judged by professionals. This is the guarantee for the end-user.

SAPHO close to growers:
To bring the plants to the garden centres and the landscapers, we work in close association with a network of professionals renowned for their technical and commercial skills.
In France, to cater for the special needs of the varieties, three networks of agreed nurseries have been set up to propagate the plants.
