When I design my projects, I always make a mix. I define a base by choosing a palette of plants I'm sure of. This “base” of plants reassures me about the future look I want for the garden, the accents I want to set in terms of shapes and colors. Then, I add other plants whose behavior and habit I know to be more random (seedlings, for example) or plants I want to test.
Among my best sellers, I realize that many are Sapho varieties. But as the Sapho brand name doesn't appear in the plant names, I hadn't identified them as a group as such! Now I'll be more careful.
For example, Malus PERPETU® 'Evereste' is a must in my projects. Hydrangea paniculata MAGICAL® (Starlight, Sweet Summer...) are also a regular fixture in my cool-soil gardens.
As for trees, I'd been following the work on graphiosis-resistant elms. In limestone soils, I planted some in a project in Burgundy, enabling elms to be reinstalled in the landscape.
I really like St. John's wort with fruit (the Hypericum MAGICAL® range) for its long-lasting interest. They are structuring plants in flowerbeds. When I do palettes in yellows, I like the chartreuse-green foliage. In autumn, we can have a rather warm palette, with varieties with particularly colorful fruit. Hibiscus CHIFFON have a very long flowering period. Pittosporum 'Golf Ball' and 'Golden Ball' are also very suitable for landscaping.
Generally speaking, Sapho plants have excellent qualities, with well-described, identified and reliable characteristics (shape, color...). In a landscape project, there are potentially many uncertainties. It's reassuring to be able to base some of our choices on a more controlled plant palette. What's more, these are plants with qualities of development, resistance and ease of maintenance, which also helps the landscaper to ensure the success of the garden.
During the Jardins, Jardin event, we had the pleasure of meeting Mathilde Tieleman. She designed Jardins des Sens, jardins des Soins for the Jardins & Santé association, a project which won her the Prix de la Création Paysagère 2024. This therapeutic garden harmoniously combines nature and care.
