The spaces to be planted are increasingly varied in terms of size, agro-climatic conditions and uses. Climate change...
Testimony of Catherine Boudet, landscape gardener and founder of the 5e Saison.
In my growing beds, I discovered a natural mutation in an Elaeagnus macrophylla. There was a branch that grew differently. You need a good eye when you're a nurseryman! I took cuttings from it and it grew well. I repotted it in a container and noticed that the variegated foliage was really bright. I called it MARYLINE® because that's my wife's first name and also because its foliage is as blonde as Maryline Monroe's hair! It's a slow-growing, compact little plant that's well suited to small gardens. It keeps its lovely bright yellow colour well.
I knew Sapho because I already had Sapho varieties in cultivation. And Sapho is French. So I contacted them to present my variety and see how it could be protected. It went really well. They planted some in the nurseries to test them in cultivation and check that the variety worked well. I also presented MARYLINE® at Plantarium, where it won a medal in 2015.
Since then, Sapho has been managing the licensing contracts, collecting royalties and promoting the product in France and abroad. There are even Elaeagnus MARYLINE® in Japan! One year, there was a typhoon. The Japanese noticed that the foliage of MARYLINE® had resisted the spray very well, and that gave it an extra argument. A real life-size test!
