Testimony of Claire Alix Barrault, director of Barrault Horticulture
I love discovering new varieties. I'm always on the lookout! It's always interested me personally and it's important for my job. It allows me to renew the ranges in my projects, to innovate with flowering, variegated foliage, plants that are out of the ordinary, that will catch the eye, astonish passers-by, locals and tourists. Every year, Pépinières Lafitte introduces me to selections from the Sapho catalogue. Sometimes I really find what I like. For example, I love the colours of the Salvia 'Melen', the foliage of the Abelia 'Kaleidoscope', and so on.
These new varieties also need to be robust. With Sapho, I'm confident, because the new varieties have already been tested by nurseries before being marketed. But of course, you have to try them out and see how they work in your own situation. Here in Biarritz, we're particularly looking for plants that can withstand the seaside, with the best possible flowering and summer flowering for the tourist season. Evergreen foliage is a plus. Climate change is also making us more sensitive to drought resistance. Planting in our flowerbeds allows us to see what is resistant and what isn't.
We've introduced Distyllium Blue Cascade. It's a great plant, with its bluish foliage, which does very well by the sea. We've put it in quite a few places, including areas that tended to be trampled by pedestrians, the ‘passage shortcuts’ that are now respected. Nandina MAGICAL® Lemon-Lime has beautiful, flashy foliage that brightens up a bed. Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Golf Bal' by the sea is great, with its ball-shaped habit that's not very tall. I can't wait to see what Sapho has in store for us next!
In charge of plant purchasing for the town of Biarritz, Anne Seznec selects plants that will delight local residents and tourists alike, while being adapted to the seaside climate.
